Greenhouse gas emissions

It is important that our business contributes to climate change solutions and for more than 15 years, we have worked to reduce energy use and greenhouse emissions.

We first set performance improvement targets in 1998 and have well developed programmes including applying a systematic approach to innovative technologies in new projects to assist us in reaching our performance goals.

In the first five year cycle of Australia's energy efficiency opportunities act (2006 - 2011), we identified 535 energy savings opportunities with potential savings of 12 Petajoules. Over half of the opportunities have been implemented in the period and our commitment continues.

Research studies coal seam gas emissions

Rio Tinto Coal Australia has completed a world-first, four-year pilot project to explore the feasibility of draining gas from coal seams before open cut mining. This is part of our work to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and those of our customers.

Rio Tinto Earth Assist delivers hands-on results

Students from more than 60 schools across Western Australia have taken part in Conservation Volunteer's Rio Tinto Earth Assist programme since it began in 2009.
