Environment

Environmental challenges and associated business risks continue to grow around the world, driven by economic development tensions and competing land uses, increasing population pressure, shifts in regulation and concerns about the impacts of climate change. Community, government, investor and regulator scrutiny of Rio Tinto's environmental performance has never been stronger.

Sustainable management of those environmental risks and the natural resources that our businesses depend on is critical to our long term success. We have adopted a pro-active approach to managing our global environmental performance, including identifying key risks across the Group and implementing global environmental standards and strategies around water, land management and biodiversity, air quality, waste management and climate and energy.

These standards and strategies help each of our operations manage their individual environmental challenges and opportunities and set benchmark performance expectations globally.
